The CS1500 and CS1600 are the first in a new generation of digital Power Factor Correction (PFC) ICs to enable applications such as power supplies and fluorescent ballast systems to meet or exceed strict global regulations for energy efficiency.

Featuring Cirrus Logic’s new EXL Core™ architecture, with its currently 53 patented and patent-pending digital algorithm technologies, the CS1500 and CS1600 have the advantage over analog products of being able to intelligently solve increasingly complex power management challenges. Through its patent-pending digital noise shaping technology, both the CS1500 and CS1600 enable reduced-sized EMI filters, which cut the need for additional high-priced components and circuitry.
These digital ICs improve energy efficiency across all load conditions, with a distinct performance advantage in light load conditions, and simplify system designs by reducing external component count by more than 30 percent.

Launched here this month as the first component in the new family, the CS1500 is a high performance Variable Frequency Discontinuous Conduction Mode (VF - DCM), active Power Factor Correction (PFC) controller, optimized to deliver the lowest PFC system cost in power supply designs below 300W. The unique architecture of the CS1500 eliminates the need for a current sense resistor, while still providing overcurrent and overpower protection.

The proprietary Variable ON time / variable frequency algorithm is used to achieve close to unity power factor and to shape the EMI noise spectrum, thus reducing the conducted EMI filtering size and cost. The feedback loop is closed through an integrated compensation network within the IC, eliminating the need for additional external components.

Protection features such as overvoltage, overcurrent, overpower, open and short circuit protection, over-temperature, and brownout help protect the device during abnormal transient conditions.
