Today’s medical instruments use a wide variety of add-on peripherals such as probes, sensors, and consumables that perform specific invasive or non-invasive functions. Most of these peripherals have either a single use cycle (disposable) or limited use cycle for hygienic and reliability reasons. Due to their short use cycles, consumable peripherals represent an important revenue stream for medical equipment manufacturers.   

It is critical then for OEMs to lock out aftermarket clones to protect their revenue and reputation. Towards this end, they have increasingly begun to embed electronics into peripherals for identification, storage of calibration data, usage and expiration control.

Because peripherals are typically attached to the main monitoring equipment through an electromechanical connector with limited pins, system designers must add this peripheral functionality with minimal interconnect. Additionally, sensors and consumables are manufactured in various shapes and sizes, so they sometimes require innovative packaging solutions when standard IC packaging won’t fit.
