IGBT gate drivers designed for 2.5A

NEC Electronics Europe introduces new IGBT gate drive optocoupler series which are based on a modified output form aiming improved characteristics. The output has changed from Bipolar-MOSFET to MOSFET-MOSFET form with the result of improved switching speed and a reduced output voltage drop achieving more efficient IGBT drive.

The new IGBT gate drivers are designed for 2.5A max. peak output current and will be released in two package versions: The PS9505 comes in a conventional 8-pin dual inline package (DIP) and the PS9305 is offered in a 8-pin shrunk dual inline package (S-DIP) with a pin to pin distance of 1.27mm, reducing the on board footprint to half of a conventional 8-pin DIP.

The PS9505 and PS9305 series consist of a GaAlAs LED at the input side and a photo diode with signal processing circuit and power stage at the output side. The isolated drivers feature the combination of a high speed optocoupler providing high isolation voltage as well as IGBT/MOSFET driving characteristics supplying high output voltage and current.

Features

  • Minimum output current 2A, maximum output current 2.5A
  • High speed switching: tPHL/tPLH=0.25µs max, small Pulse Width Distortion=0.1µs max
  • Minimum Output Voltage VOH = VCC-3.0V at IO=-100mA.
  • The supply current is limited to ICC = 3mA (max.).
  • Integrated UVLO (Under Voltage Lock Out) protection with hysteresis
  • High common mode transient immunity (CMR) of minimum 25 kV/µs
  • Maximum operating ambient Temperature of 110°C.
  • DIP and small package SDIP (Shrunk DIP) providing highest safety characteristics such as long creepage distance, >0.4mm isolation distance and 5000Vr.m.s. isolation voltage.

With its dedicated characteristics the PS9505 and PS9305 optocouplers are ideally suited for industrial inverter and motor control applications where a micro controller unit needs to be electrically isolated from the high voltage side. Typical applications are frequency converters, AC drives, solar inverters, induction heating and many other applications.

Samples of PS9505 and PS9305 are available now. Mass production start is planned for December 2009.
