Renesas ‘Secure Identity’ Board ID Solution: Flexible, Powerful Solutions for M2M Authentication

Based on Renesas' proven smart card IC technology and a solid foundation of technology, products and support, the Board ID™ solution is a cost effective, easy to implement approach to drastically reduce risk in machine-to-machine ("M2M") device implementation, while also opening new opportunities for revenue generation. Designed specifically for the M2M market, Renesas’ Board ID solutions build on the more than 20 years of security market expertise and a significant track record of deploying M2M authentication solutions. The Board ID is based on Renesas' proven smart card IC technology which includes EAL4+ and FIPS Level 2 certifications.

Renesas Board ID Benefits
The Board ID device offers significant benefits to traditional machine identification technologies such as EEPROMs, e.g.:
- Anti-cloning - Ensures only a genuine or certified component can be used by a system
- Usage control - Ensures host system will only work with a valid peripheral as per the prescribed usage conditions (# times, duration, location)

Board ID M2M Authentication

In operation, the Board ID based solution makes M2M authentication a fast process. The host authenticates the Board ID chip via a communication link that does NOT have to be secured. The entire process takes place quickly - typically in a fraction of a second. The Board ID chip is pre-equipped with firmware and security application (see figure) to perform easily the security services described above.
Renesas believes that the Board ID technology will be of interest to many small and medium-size companies, as well as large OEMs. To best serve the mid-size companies, Renesas is partnering with a large, well-established electronics distribution company, Avnet, to provide cost-effective logistical and value-added programming services for this product.
Serving the electronics industry for more than three decades, Avnet Logistics has established itself as the leader in IC programming for security devices. Avnet Logistics provides a full range of serialization and security service offerings requiring high levels of security protocols to assure customer information is not compromised. These include MAC addresses, RFID tags, HDCP keys and license keys.
In addition, Avnet assures no duplication of data, full traceability, secured storage of data, and full reporting to the customer. Avnet can also support the generation of keys if required by the customer.
The Board ID Demonstration Kit enables you to evaluate the state-of-the-art Machine-to-Machine authentication capability of the Board ID device. The pre-loaded Authentication Applet on the Board ID device handles all the complicated authentication steps so that there is no need to develop software for the Board ID device. The demonstration kit takes advantage of the applet and provides simple, yet powerful, authentication capabilities. PC utility software included in the package provides guidance in setting up the authentication condition and launching actual authentication.
