World’s Lowest Voltage GPIO with Independent I/O Voltages

The SX1501, SX1502 and SX1503 are complete ultra low voltage General Purpose parallel Input/Output (GPIO) expanders ideal for low power or handheld battery powered equipment. They allow easy serial expansion of I/O through a standard 400kHz I²C interface.

This family of GPIO expanders come in 4-, 8-, and 16-channels of I/Os operating with a VDD range of 1.2V to 5.5V connecting easily to today’s low core voltage chipsets in battery powered handheld applications without the need for level translating circuits. The I/Os are divided into two banks connected to an I/O voltage with a range of 1.2V to 5.5V which is independent with the other bank as well as with VDD. This allows interfacing to devices that have different I/O voltages with the same GPIO expander.

The I/Os can be programmed via the 400kHz I2C compatible interface for PLD functionality offering AND, OR, XOR logic functions. A hardware reset input as well as an active low interrupt output for transition detection for I/Os configured as inputs are also available for system management. One address pin provides two unique slave IDs allowing up to two GPIO expanders to be connected on the same I2C bus avoiding conflicts with other system devices.

Features

  • Low Voltage Operation: Can connect directly with 1.2V, 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V chipsets in handheld or battery operated applications without the need for level translator circuits
  • LED Drive Capability: All the 5V tolerant I/Os are capable of sinking 12mA while a few of them are capable of sinking up to 24mA
  • Independent I/O voltages: The I/Os are divided into 2 banks each tied to an independent I/O voltage which is also independent of the VDD. This allows the same GPIO to interface to two different devices having different I/O levels.
  • Low Power Consumption: The average supply current is only 2μA with a standby mode of typically <1μA.
  • Small Footprint: The SX1501/SX1502 are offered in 3mm x 3mm 20-QFN packages while the SX1503 is offered in a 4mm x 4mm 28-QFN package in the extended (-40°C to +85°C) temperature range. These devices will also be offered in 20-TSSOP and 28-TSSOP packages respectively.
