Wavecom Launch M2M Developers – M2M Studio 1.0 Integrated Development Environment

Wavecom will deliver a Christmas present for developers of embedded cellular applications, or M2M as the industry terms it, next month.  The eagerly awaited new version of their M2M Integrated Development Environment has been touted as being the first truly integrated suite of tools for the development of C coded real time software applications that can be downloaded and natively executed on Wavecom Wireless CPU® devices to reduce the Total Cost of Ownership.

Wavecom initiated its first global beta testing program in October this year with a view to evaluating what developers thought of the progress made.  Beta testers were asked to comment on their expectations of the new IDE product prior to downloading it and the top three responses were “Integration of tools” at 29% of respondents, “Documentation improvement” at 18% and “Ease of use” at 15%.

Named “M2M Studio 1.0”, the new IDE promises to fully integrate what were previously isolated environment components such as the source code editor, project build wizard, target download, RTE mode monitor, JTAG debugger (beta), traces emulator and development tool chain.  The rapid advances made in the IDE roadmap have been made possible thanks to Wavecom’s acquisition of Anyware Technologies in February 2008, a major contributor to the open source Eclipse community. Anyware Technologies has 6 years development experience with Eclipse and it is an Eclipse Foundation and Eclipse Training Alliance Member. The company has created a lot of tools built on Eclipse sold under their own brand in addition to custom applications for major customers such as EDF, Airbus, CEA and Continental.

While the release of M2M Studio 1.0 brings integration, significant new features and ease of use improvements, the advances don’t stop here.  The new automatic software update module of M2M Studio will allow developers to upgrade to new releases of the IDE in a much smoother manner, providing them with access to continuous enhancement via Wavecom’s Internet update service.  The roadmap for M2M Studio is packed full of great new features and bi-annual major releases will be made throughout 2009 and beyond, in addition to minor releases.

M2M Studio 1.0 will be freely available in December for download from the Wavecom website (www.wavecom.com/m2mstudio) and will be compatible with the Wireless Microprocessor® family, Quik family (Q24, Q26, Q52 Series among others) and the Plug & Play family (Fastrack Supreme 10 and 20).  The new product is expected to be used by developers of innovative M2M and automotive applications such as home security systems, asset tracking devices, in-vehicle fleet/telematics units, utility meters and fixed wireless phones/terminals among other applications.
