
Silicon Labs User-Programmable XO/VCXOs Make Their Debut
Silicon Labs has leveraged its proven DSPLL technology to create the industry’s first user-programmable XOs and VCXOs that provide any-rate frequency synthesis at jitter levels of 0.3 ps RMS. These any-rate programmable oscillators address the growing need for reconfigurable, low jitter clock sources in next generation networking equipment, telecom infrastructure, wireless base stations, broadcast video, test and measurement, and data acquisition. They greatly simplify high-speed clock design, facilitate design reuse, lower system costs and improve reliability in these applications. The Si57x replaces multiple discrete fixed-frequency oscillators with a single device, minimizing system costs and simplifying design reuse while improving system reliability.
The Si5xx family of oscillators (XOs) and voltage-controlled oscillators (VCXOs) offer the industry’s shortest lead times, highest reliability and unmatched performance, making them ideal for applications such as networking equipment, base stations, test and measurement equipment, storage area networks and broadcast video systems. With optimized DSPLL® technology, Silicon Laboratories is able to move frequency control and tuning from a complex resonator to a single CMOS IC.
Unmatched Performance
The Si5xx products support frequency ranges from 10 MHz to 1.4 GHz, provide ultra-low jitter performance (<0.3 ps rms typical OC-192) and offer new features that have been unavailable in high-frequency oscillators based on SAW resonators or inverted mesa crystals. These features include dual, quad and any-rate frequency operation as well as selectable voltage gain (Kv) for VCXO devices.

Utilizing Silicon Labs’ DSPLL technology, the Si5xx products offer total frequency stability over time and temperature that is more than five times better than competing SAW devices. Compared to inverted mesa crystal oscillators, Silicon Labs offers a solution that is more mechanically robust while providing five times better aging stability.
