Silicon Laboratories, an ISO/TS16949 registered company, has expanded its automotive MCU portfolio with the C8051F50x MCU.  The C8051F50x product family is the industry’s first 8-bit automotive microcontroller family that offers an integrated CAN to LIN gateway, with no external timing components (i.e., crystal or resonator), in a 5x5 mm package.

Digital Features

  • 64 kB Flash
  • 50 MIPS
  • CAN 2.0B
  • LIN 2.0 controller (in hardware)
  • 16-bit timers/PWM
  • SPI, UART, I2C

Analog Features

  • 12-bit ADC (200 ksps)
  • Precision voltage reference
  • ±0.5% internal oscillator
  • programmable comparator
  • voltage regulator
  • temperature sensor
  • POR
  • brown-out protection

System Features

  • QFN and QFP packages
  • WDT
  • on-chip debug
  • 1.8 to 5.25 V
  • -40 to +125 ºC operation
  • full automotive specification and qualification (AEC-Q100)

Unconditional performance

No trade-offs and no de-rating across entire automotive operating range

Full digital performance across temperature and voltage (e.g., 50 MHz @ 1.8 V @ 125 ºC)

Full analog performance across temperature and voltage (e.g., 12-bit ± 1LSB @ 200 ksps @ 1.8 V @ 125 ºC)

±0.5% precision oscillator operates at full device speed (50 MHz) across full voltage and temperature range

Ultra-High Precision Oscillator (±0.5%) Across Voltage and Temperature

As embedded applications become more complex the need for an accurate time-base becomes more important.  Furthermore, to ensure compliance with the LIN 2.0 standard, a LIN master-mode network controller must maintain ±0.5% accuracy over the entire temperature and voltage operating range.  In addition, low-speed CAN networks (125 kbits/sec) also require ±0.75% accuracy over the entire temperature and voltage operating range.  For all other competitive solutions, this means an external precision timing device (i.e., crystal or oscillator) which adds significant system cost and unnecessary complexity.

64 kB Flash, 50 MIPS, 12-bit ADC, CAN 2.0B, and LIN 2.0 in a 5x5 mm Package

Lowered cost, added features, and extended performance continue to drive the miniaturization of microelectronics.  The ability to place a high-performance mixed-signal microcontroller at the “point-of-control” is very desirable.  MCUs are being integrated directly within sensors, motors, switches, cables, and connectors.  The programmable nature of the MCU coupled with its small form factor make it ideal in the growing number of automotive electronic applications.

C8051F500DK Development Kit

The C8051F500DK is a fully functional “out-of-the-box” development tool.  Everything required for application development is included:

  • C8051F500 target board (C8051F500-TB)
  • Quick-start guide
  • AC to DC power adapter
  • USB debug adapter (USB to debug interface)
  • USB cable
  • CD-ROM; CD content includes the following:
  • Silicon Labs integrated development environment (IDE)
  • Keil 8051 development tools (macro assembler, linker, evaluation C-compiler)
  • Source code examples and register definition files
  • Documentation
  • C8051F500 development kit user’s guide

A unique aspect of this development board is that it has two C8051F500 devices on a single board.  This enables the designer to develop a fully functioning CAN 2.0B and LIN 2.0 master/slave network with a single piece of hardware.  Furthermore, the external connector and 12 V regulator allows the designer to interface to any existing automotive network for maximum design and test flexibility.

ToolStick C8051F502 Daughter Card

With this release comes a new addition to the ToolStick family: the C8051F502 daughter card.  This will enable ultra-low cost development with the C8051F50x using the ToolStick platform.
