With more than 70 new products, Silicon Labs new ISOpro ultra low-power digital Isolator family offers industry-leading features and performance across a broad 2.5 kV-rated isolation portfolio. The ISOpro family features the industry’s widest channel count with up to 6-channels in a single package, the highest data rate (up to 150 Mbps), lowest power (<1.4 mA per channel @ 1 Mbps), and highest ESD immunity (4 kV HBM, 400 V MM). New to the isolator product line are I2C compatible Isolators with bi-directional isolated channels on both the serial data (SDA) and serial clock (SCL) lines. Additional unidirectional isolated data channels further simplify the end-user BOM, and reduce cost and complexity in I2C applications. In addition to the previous package offerings, a new 16-pin narrow-body SOIC option has been added with a 50% smaller PCB footprint.
Since compliance with safety standards is a critical part of system design, digital isolators are found in an extremely wide variety of applications. Anywhere there is a need for electrical isolation (for human safety and to prevent damage to equipment), level shifting, and ground-loop elimination represents a target application for digital isolators. ISOpro digital isolators can also be bundled with Silicon Labs’ Si85xx AC Current Sensor, Si82xx ISOdrivers, Si346x PoE PSE, Si3226 ProSLICs and many C8051Fxx MCUs to provide complete solutions for isolation design challenges in diverse applications.
The ISOpro family is designed for use in applications that require a 2.5 kVRMS “basic” insulation rating as detailed by the following safety specifications.
- UL1577 (UL recognition for 2500 VRMS for 1 minute)
- CSA/IEC 60950-1
- CSA component acceptance notice 5A
- VDE certification conformity, per:
- IEC 60747-5-2
- VDE0884 Part 2
Features
- The Si846x 6-channel isolator has options for 0, 1, 2, or 3 reverse channels for the Si8460, Si8461, Si8462, and Si8463 respectively. The Si846x is available in a narrow body (NB) SOIC-16 package
- The Si845x is a 5 channel isolator with options for 0, 1, or 2 reverse channels for the Si8450/55, Si8451, and Si8452 respectively. The Si8455 has no Enable pin functionality on the input side (ie. the device is always enabled). The Si845x is only available in the NB SOIC-16 except for the Si8455 which is exclusively available in the WB SOIC-16 package.
- The Si844x is a 4 channel isolator with options for 0, 1, or 2 reverse channels for the Si8440/45, Si8441, and Si8442 respectively. The Si8445 has no Enable pin functionality (i.e. the device is always enabled). The Si844x is available in the NB SOIC-16 and the WB SOIC-16 packages.
- The Si843x is a 3 channel isolator with options for 0 or 1 reverse channels for the Si8430/35, or Si8431 respectively. The Si8435 has no Enable pin functionality (i.e. the device is always enabled). The Si845x is available in the NB SOIC-16 and the WB SOIC-16 packages.
- The Si842x is a 2 channel isolator with options for 0 or 1 reverse channels for the Si8420, and Si8421 respectively. The Si8410 is a 1 channel isolator. The Si842x and Si8410 are available exclusively in the NB SOIC-8 package.
- All products have two speed grade options: ≤ 1Mbps and ≤ 150 Mbps. The previous 10 Mbps option has been combined into the 150 Mbps speed grade option.
- A new 1 kVrms isolation rating ordering option has been added for applications which do not require the full 2.5 kVrms isolation rating. The 1 kVrms devices are generally priced 5 to 10% lower than their 2.5 kVrms equivalents, and are available exclusively in the NB SOIC-16 package. 1kVrms devices are applicable for applications with working voltages ≤ 184 Vpeak. These devices are not explicitly safety-certified (UL, CSA, VDE) like their 2.5kV rated functional equivalents; so the end customer must be able to accept this when ordering the lower cost 1kV-rated devices.
Evaluation Boards
In order to assist with the demonstration, evaluation, and design of the ISOpro digital isolators, a number of complete evaluation kits and reference designs are available:
- Si84xxISO-KIT (Evaluation Kit)
This kit is available now and is intended for basic functional testing and engineering validation of various ISOpro product configurations. The evaluation board is populated with:
- Si8400—Bidirectional I2C isolator
- Si8421—2-channel isolator with one reverse channel
- Si8442—4-channel isolator with 2 reverse channels
- Si8463—6-channel isolator with 3 reverse channels
