Si598/599 I2C Programmable XO/VCXOs Add to FPGA-friendly Timing Portfolio
Taking advantage of Silicon Labs’ patented DSPLL® technology, the Si598/599 10 to 525 MHz I2C programmable XO/VCXOs are an extension of the popular Si57x product line that combines low jitter performance, frequency flexibility and competitive pricing. Low jitter reduces signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and bit-error-rates (BER), thus extending system performance. These devices provide a completely integrated solution for low jitter clock generation that saves board space and enables design re-use.
These new parts provide industry-leading tuning resolution of 28 parts per trillion (PPT) to achieve any frequency synthesis with low phase jitter (0.5 ps RMS for Si598). They are the ideal solution for a wide range of synchronization and clocking applications that require fine frequency adjustments. One Si598/599 can replace multiple discrete oscillators, clock generator ICs with external crystals or boutique frequency synthesis solutions like direct digital synthesizers (DDS).
FPGA Compatibility
FGPAs are popular because they provide flexibility and performance. Since all FPGAs need timing, Silicon Labs timing offers FGPA-friendly features that allow easy interfacing with FPGAs:
- CMOS or LVDS output formats: FPGA SERDES reference clock inputs require LVDS operating from 1.8 or 2.5 V. All Silicon Labs timing products support both CMOS and LVDS, making them ideal for FPGA clock inputs.
- I2C programmability supports any frequency and allows Silicon Labs clocking to be as flexible as the FPGA. Often, rates and operating modes must be switched in order to meet multiple applications—Silicon Labs can support this.
- The best power supply noise rejection in the industry enables our high-performance devices to live side-by-side with FPGAs in very demanding and noisy environments. Silicon Labs clocks and oscillators use integrated on-chip power filtering to maintain low jitter performance in the presence of extreme noise.
If you need a single clock, use the Si500S Silicon Oscillator. It is cost competitive with many low frequency XOs and offers the following:
- Extended reliability, especially at hot temperatures
- Low period jitter necessary for maintaining internal timing constraints
- Short lead times for new frequencies up to 200 MHz enable rapid development
If you need multiple clock domains, use the Si5355 Clock Generator. It offers the following:
- Web-customized factory programmable clocks via ClockBuilder
- Any four unique frequencies from a single XTAL/clock input
- Up to eight output clocks
If the protocol accepts up to 150 ppm (0 to 70 °C) or 250 ppm (0 to 85 °C) frequency tolerance, use the Si500D Silicon Oscillator. It offers the following:
- Low cost differential with excellent jitter supports up to 6 Gbps links
- Best reliability, especially at hot temperatures
- Short lead times for new frequencies up to 200 MHz enable rapid development
If 30, 50 or 100 ppm are necessary, use the Si590/591 XOs. They offer the following:
- Guaranteed low jitter enhances performance
- Built in power supply noise rejection simplifies power supply design
The XO/VCXO parametric search offers step-by-step guidance for selecting the right device. Easy to use and convenient, this is a great way to search for the right XO/VCXO device.
The parametric search provides a link to the XO/VCXO part number generator. Once you have selected the right part family, this tool allows you to customize the device and generate a custom orderable part number Part numbers requested using this utility are directly orderable as free samples with 2-week delivery time.
