Capacitive touch applications are becoming more popular in everyday life.  In addition to industrial and commercial products like security panels, fuel dispensers and cash machines, consumer products including white goods, office equipment, toys and games are adopting next-gen capacitive technology.  Silicon Labs is please to support both industrial and commercial applications with low power “green” technology complimented by fast and accurate capacitive sensing features of the C8051F99x MCU family.

Available with up to 14 capacitive sensing inputs, the F99x products are the industry’s first MCUs with a sub micro amp (<1 μA) wake-on-touch average current consumption.  The C8051F99x provides easy and reliable support for capacitive buttons, sliders, wheels, and capacitive proximity sensing.  It comes complete with QuickSense Studio, a software environment to program, debug, and analyze capacitive touch sense, proximity sense, and ambient light sense solutions.  In addition, the C8051F99x integrates the following:

  • 8 kB of Flash
  • Internal precision oscillator
  • 12-bit ADC
  • Voltage reference
  • Four timers
  • 25 MHz processor
  • Tiny 3x3 mm package

The C8051F99x MCU has several key benefits versus the competition:

  • Industry’s only sub-μA wake-on-touch solution
  • Industry-leading acquisition time of 40 μs
  • Superior noise immunity―C8051F99x signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is up to 4 times higher than leading competitors
  • More reliable operation in noisy environments or when thick laminate overlays are used for design

F990SliderEK Capactive Touch Slider Evaluation Kit

The C8051F990 Slider Evaluation Kit is a battery powered capacitive sensing slider board that can be used to demonstrate several key features of the C8051F99x ultra low power MCU.

  • Tiny layout with few discrete components―save cost of crystal, resistors, capacitors, and board space
  • Wake-on-slide – No off switch!  Ultra low power wake-on-touch implementation lasts >7 years while constantly monitoring for a slide.
  • QuickSense™ Slider Control—Allows multiple capacitive sensing pads to be bound together to form a slider control. The QuickSense API performs all required calculations and notifies the application software of the finger position on the slider.
  • Gesture Recognition—QuickSense events enable the ability to detect gestures, such as a “pinch”, on the slider. In this system, the “pinch” gesture is used to switch amongst different modes: slider demo, battery meter, and LED dimmer.
  • Battery Meter—Using the C8051F990’s 12-bit ADC, the system is able to measure the battery voltage and displays remaining voltage level.
  • LED Dimmer—The system dynamically reduces LED power consumption by driving the LEDs with a PWM signal. Taking advantage of the fast 2 μs wake-up time, the MCU can efficiently wake up from sleep, adjust the state of the LED, and go back to sleep.

QuickSense Studio Development Environment

The C8051F99x capacitive sensing MCUs are supported within QuickSense Studio to develop unique user interface products. The easy-to-use graphical environment offers the ability to generate MCU firmware for buttons, sliders, and wheels, along with firmware for infrared proximity and motion detection, gesture detection, and algorithmic identification of background light types.  QuickSense Studio also provides a real-time monitoring and adjustment tool enabling you to thoroughly understand and optimize their user interface.

Also included within QuickSense Studio is the Configuration Wizard.  The Wizard simplifies the addition of human interface technologies and allows you to set up capacitive buttons, sliders, and wheels in an intuitive software GUI – no need to type a single line of code.
