Silicon Labs CP21xx Bridge Connectivity Devices Simplify USB Design

The latest additions to Silicon Labs’ industry-leading Smart Interface family are the CP2104, CP2105, CP2110 and CP2112 connectivity bridges. These devices extend the bridge portfolio to include cost-sensitive USB to UART, USB to Dual UART, HID-USB to UART and HID-USB to SMBUS/I²C bridge solutions.  Common to all these devices are royalty-free software driver suites, crystal-less operation, in-system programming memory and small 4x4 mm packages. In combination, these features reduce cost, simplify design and shorten development time.

Silicon Labs is uniquely positioned to be the only supplier able to offer HID-USB to UART and SMBUS/I²C solutions (CP2110 and CP2112).  HID-USB class solutions have been added to the smart interface family, eliminating the need for installing drivers, offering seamless compatibility with most operating systems and delivering significant savings and time to market advantages.  Each new bridge has:

  • USB 2.0 full-speed function controller
  • USB transceiver
  • Oscillator
  • One-time programmable ROM
  • Compact 4x4 mm QFN-24 package
  • No other external USB components are required.


In addition, each bridge has the specific functionality and features outlined below:

CP2104—USB to UART Bridge

The CP2104 is a highly-integrated USB-to-UART bridge controller providing a simple solution for updating RS-232/RS-485 designs to USB using a minimum of components and PCB space. Also includes:

  • Asynchronous serial data bus (UART) with full modem control signals

CP2105—USB to Dual UART Bridge

The CP2105 is a highly-integrated USB-to-Dual UART bridge controller providing a simple solution for updating RS-232 designs to USB using a minimum of components and PCB space. Also includes:

  • Two asynchronous serial data buses (UART) with full modem control signals

CP2110—HID-USB to UART Bridge

The CP2110 is a highly-integrated HID USB-to-UART bridge controller providing a simple solution for updating RS-232 designs to USB using a minimum of components and PCB space. Also includes:

  • Asynchronous serial data bus (UART)
  • Uses standard USB HID device class which is natively supported by most operating systems

CP2112—HID-USB to SMBUS (I²C)

The CP2112 is a highly-integrated HID USB-to-SMBus Bridge providing a simple solution for controlling SMBus slave devices with USB and using a minimum of components and PCB space. Also includes:

  • Uses standard USB HID device class which is natively supported by most operating systems


The CP21xx products enable USB connectivity to be easily added to any portfolio MCU. By pairing the CP21xx with any of Silicon Labs’ C8051 MCUs, you can enable USB capability with no complex USB software development required.  Although many USB-based MCU devices are available, we enable you to choose the most compelling feature set based on your application needs as a one-stop supplier.
