Silicon Labs Si51x XO/VCXOs: frequency flexible, high-performance crystal oscillators offer excellent value for <250 MHz applications
The Si51x XO/VCXOs are the latest addition to Silicon Labs’ expanding family of frequency flexible, high-performance crystal oscillators. The Si51x offer excellent value for <250 MHz applications that require a combination of frequency agility, good jitter performance, high reliability and competitive pricing. These products migrate the oscillator frequency synthesis function to Silicon Labs’ programmable DSPLL IC while doing the following:
- Simplifying the crystal oscillator manufacturing flow
- Enabling mass customized XO/VCXOs with low jitter
- Short, predictable lead times
In addition to offering XO/VCXOs with a wide range of format, voltage and stability options (for drop-in compatibility with conventional solutions) the Si51x offers the industry’s first I2C programmable XO and dual frequency XO/VCXO in the 3.2 x 5 mm form factor. Of course this minimizes PCB footprint requirements in space-constrained, next-generation designs.
Due to its low jitter and frequency flexibility, the Si51x family is ideal for FPGA applications. The Si514 is the ideal solution for FPGAs, Serializer/Deserializer (SerDes) reference clocks and multi-rate clocking applications. It generates any frequency and supports LVDS, CMOS and dual CMOS outputs that integrate a 1:2 fanout buffer. Best-in-class power supply noise rejection means that the Si514 can be placed near the FPGA, where ground and power rail noise is the strongest, simplifying layout.
Also, the Si514 can also be used to implement a FPGA-based all-digital PLL. The Si514 operates as the PLL VCO and all other circuitry is integrated in the FPGA. An all-digital PLL replaces a DAC + VCXO, providing BOM consolidation while eliminating analog noise and quantization error associated with traditional solutions. The Si514 has a wide tuning range of ±1000 ppm and produces a continuous, glitchless output frequency when tuned across this range.
