Low Cost Fan Control Reference Designs

1) $1 Solution for Fan control with the Z8 Encore! XP®

Refernce Design Features:

  • Low cost solution (less than $1) for controlling the speed of a fan/motor.
  • Design can be extended to other capacitor start, shaded pole, or universal motor of any polarity.
  • Wide range of speed from rated-RPM to zero.
  • Automatically detects frequency and hence can be used on 220V - 50Hz or 110V - 60Hz power system without change of hardware or software.
  • Speed control possible through 2-switches or through a potentiometer.
  • Exceptionally small size of PCB allows it to be integrated inside the motor as a single piece.
  • Over current protection can be implemented.
  • Low current requirement of the controller ensures lower power dissipation during working.
  • Applications: Exhaust fan control, Convection fan control, regulator for ceiling fan, etc

2) Intelligent Cooling Fan control with the Z8 Encore! XP®

Reference Design Features:

  • All-inclusive MCU features to support design for intelligent cooling fan control, minimizing the number of external components required.
  • Up to 8 channel, 10-bit sigma-delta ADC inputs for feedback selection such as overcurrent detection, speed input, temperature input, etc.
  • On-chip comparator for over-current detection.
  • General GPIO ports configure as inputs for hall sensor inputs.
  • General GPIO ports configure as outputs for commutation control.
  • 2 enhanced 16-bit timer blocks featuring PWM capability.
  • On-chip IPO (5MHz/32kHz) requiring no external components.
  • Logic control for motor stall detection
  • On-chip temperature sensor allows temperature measurement of fan control circuit board.
  • Support commercial and industrial applications requiring one to multiple fan controllers.
  • Available in 8-, 20-, and 28-pin SOIC/QFN/PDIP/SSOP packages.
